10/14/2004 Archived Entry: "math shopping"

Part of our math program involves self-checking flash cards. I pull them out when I feel Tabitha could use a little practice in certain facts. Yesterday, I wanted her to practice all the facts she's learned so far, but that's 138 flash cards which spells B-O-R-I-N-G so I wasn't about to do that to her. Instead, I made cards numbered 1-20 and placed them around our dining room table. I had to open it to full size to accomadate all of them. Then I gave her the flash cards and had her put them under the card with the correct answer. She liked skipping around the table to find the right spot, up until she got tired, that is. She was so excited to finish all of them. I checked them while she ate lunch (she only missed 4) and gave her one penny for each correct one. She then traded in her pennies for dimes and nickels and I told her she could go shopping for one item. I keep a stash of things in my closet so I pulled them all out and put price tags on them and she "bought" one of her choosing. She was one cent shy of what she really wanted (Sim Town), so she ended up with Schoolhouse Rocks Thinking Games cd-rom. Now she's all hyped up to earn more pennies so she can shop at the Mom Store, lol. I think I need to hit the dollar store to stock up on little things.

What a great idea Z! 'The Mom Store' I never would have thought about doing anything like that. Where do you come up with these brilliant ideas?? I could use that idea for my kids although in a different arena than homeschooling. It might be a good incentive for Madeline to try harder in school. She just doesn't care about her schoolwork and keeps failing her spelling tests. Something to think about..... :o)
